A boat kept on land

Etymology

From Middle English boot, bot, boet, boyt (boat), from Old English bāt, from Proto-Germanic *baitaz, *baitą, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyd-. Cognate with Old Norse beit (boat).

Old Norse bātr (whence bátur, båt), boot, Boot, Occitan batèl and bateau are all ultimately borrowings from the Old English word.
