Etymology

From Middle English {{enm|Engeland}}, {{enm|Englelond}}, from Old English {{ang|Englaland||land of the Angles}}, from genitive of {{ang|Engle||the Angles}} + {{ang|land||land}}.

Pronunciation

Proper noun

Template:En-proper noun

  1. The region of the island of Great Britain which is to the east of Wales and the south of Scotland; one of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom.
  2. Template:Surname
  3. Template:Label The United Kingdom.

Usage notes

  • Outside the UK, and even sometimes in England itself (especially historically; less often now), the term England often refers to the UK as a whole. This use is sometimes considered offensive, especially by residents of the other constituent countries of the UK.

Usage notes

  • In formal usage, England referring to Great Britain or the United Kingdom is now very rare.
  • In common speech, England continues to be the most common word for the two respective entities as a whole. It is, however, now uncommon to use England when referring specifically to a place or incident in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. In this case, the respective word would be used ({{de|Schottland}}, {{de|Wales}}, {{de|Nordirland}}).
  • The usage including the Republic of Ireland, which is sometimes heard, is regarded as unthinking or illiterate.
